After visiting Mexico and learning of the Day of the Dead, Dayle believed in the importance of celebrating the lives of our dead loved ones.

She found through her work that the way someone dies can be the way they are remembered rather than for the life they lived.

In the UK specifically, death is not an easy topic to discuss and therefore she wanted to create something that would be received positively.

In Mexico the celebration is held over two days, however Dayle felt an evening to allow for celebration and reflection would be appropriate.

Many people, due to moving locations and cremations, do not have a grave to visit to pay their respects and she felt it could enable that space.

The first Night of Our Light was held in 2021 at a local church. Hundreds of candles were lit in the churchyard (as photographed).

Visitors were encouraged to light candles inside in honour of loved ones, and names were read out during the evening.

The most used word to describe the evening was ‘magical’. This event is held annually on 3rd November, however has evolved to be held in community allowing for many more households to take part and honour their loved ones whatever the weather.
